The Story Behind Share a Mango:

MANGO IN MAUI.jpeg

Share a Mango started during my yoga teacher training at Yoga South in Boca Raton, FL. On a perfect Florida morning I was leaving the studio for a snack and began to cut into a perfectly juicy mango. A stranger came up to me and asked for a bite and I offered her half. We became friends instantly as we delighted over the magical fruit.

Later I would delight in the 'mango culture' of Hialeah where a house without a mango tree in the yard that produces fruit every year is a significant obstacle to a sale and where abuelas compare the taste of their fruits with pride and bring plastic shopping bags bursting with ripe mangos to anyone in need in the community. Of course my late mother in laws mangos were the best and most flavorful I've ever had and I look forward to the harvest every May.

Fast forward to my new career as a physician in South Carolina. My job is to convince folks to care more about their health and a huge part of this is diet. It can change your life to find out about a delicious fresh food that is always available at your local grocery store. Still some of our community members are homebound because of illness or lack of transportation. By bringing a fresh mango to a strangers home I offer a gift and invite a conversation.
